Why Utilization Matters

Credit utilization is the second-biggest factor in how lenders evaluate your creditworthiness — right after payment history. Even if you pay on time every month, using too much of your available credit can hurt you.

The general recommendation is to stay below 30%, but below 10% is where the real advantage lives. Genesis Budget makes it easy to see where you stand and what to do next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Credit utilization is the percentage of your available credit that you're currently using. For example, if you have a $10,000 total credit limit and $2,000 in balances, your utilization is 20%. It's the second most important factor in credit scoring — high utilization signals risk to lenders even if you pay on time.

No — this tool tracks your credit utilization only. Credit scores depend on many factors that only the credit bureaus have access to (full payment history, account ages, inquiry records, etc.). What we do show is your utilization percentage, which is one of the most important and controllable factors in your credit health.

If you already have credit card debts in your budget, they'll be detected automatically — just click "Set Limit" to add the credit limit and start tracking. You can also add standalone accounts (cards with zero balance, for example) using the "Add Account" button.

Installment debts (auto loans, mortgages, student loans, personal loans) are shown separately since they don't have revolving utilization the same way credit cards do. They're displayed with their remaining balance and interest rate so you have a complete picture of all your debt.
