Genesis Budget vs. EveryDollar vs. YNAB

All three run the same core method — zero-based budgeting, where every dollar gets a job. The difference is what happens around the budget: bank connections, wealth tracking, and who the product is actually built for.

What each one costs

Genesis Budget

$70 /year
$8/mo · 30-day trial, no card

Manual-entry budgeting plus a full wealth layer — investments, net worth, credit utilization, and family sharing. No free tier.

EveryDollar

$79.99 /year
$17.99/mo · free tier forever

Ramsey Solutions' app. Genuinely usable for free, and Premium is really a coaching subscription with bank sync attached.

YNAB

$109 /year
$14.99/mo · 34-day trial

The method purist. Best-in-class bank sync, reporting, and ecosystem — and the most expensive of the three.

The one row people ask about

We don't connect to your bank. That's the point.

Bank imports tell you where your money went. Entering each transaction yourself teaches you why it went there — and how to make better choices next time.

Automatic import is a rear-view mirror. By the time a transaction shows up in the app, the decision is already made and the money is already spent. Sorting it into a category afterward feels like managing your money, but all you've done is file a receipt. You finish the month with a tidy chart of a month you can't change.

Typing it in yourself takes a few minutes a week, and those few minutes are the product. You handle every purchase a second time. You notice the subscription you forgot about. You feel the fourth takeout order in a way no pie chart on the 31st will ever make you feel.

A budget tells your money where to go, not just where it went. Those are opposite skills, and only one of them changes the outcome.

Your finances are the sum of your own choices, and a tool that quietly sorts your spending into buckets lets you stay a spectator to them. This one asks you to decide where every dollar goes before it moves, then hold yourself to it. It's slower for the first month and then it isn't — because by then you already know what's coming. That's not a nicer record of your money. It's a different relationship with it.

This isn't a feature we're behind on. It isn't on the roadmap, and we keep the busywork down where it costs you nothing — recurring transactions post themselves and last month's budget copies forward in a click. If you'd rather an app watched your accounts and reported back, YNAB does that well and we'd honestly rather you used it than paid us for something you won't open.

Where each one wins

Genesis Budget

Building the habit

The only one that asks you to decide where every dollar goes before it moves, instead of reporting back after. It's also the only one that treats budgeting, debt, investments, credit, and household planning as a single product — at the lowest annual price of the three.

EveryDollar

Free, plus a coach

A permanent free tier is hard to argue with. Premium buys the Ramsey method, group coaching, and Margin Finder — people subscribe for the program as much as the software.

YNAB

Automation and reporting

Reliable direct import, deep reports, an iOS app with widgets, a public API, and a large community. If you want transactions to appear without typing them, YNAB does that best.

Who should pick Genesis Budget

You're a good fit if:

  • You want to plan your money in advance, not read a report on where it went.
  • You don't want to hand any app your bank credentials.
  • You want investments, net worth, and credit utilization in the same place as your budget.
  • You're paying down debt and want to compare snowball against avalanche.
  • You budget with a partner and want control over who can see and change what.
  • You want the lowest annual price of the three without a stripped-down tier.

Look elsewhere if:

  • You want your transactions to arrive on their own. Entering them yourself is the method here, not a gap we're filling in later.
  • You're on iPhone and want a native app. There's a mobile web app, but the native app is Android only.
  • You want to budget for free indefinitely. The trial is 30 days, then it's paid.
  • You specifically want Dave Ramsey's Baby Steps coaching built in.

Common questions

Yes. Genesis Budget is $70 per year against YNAB's $109, and $8 a month against YNAB's $14.99. Every feature is included at that price - there is no higher tier.

It depends on what EveryDollar is missing for you. If you want automatic bank import and deep reporting, YNAB is the strongest option. If you want to keep budgeting manually but add investments, net worth and credit utilization for less than EveryDollar Premium costs, Genesis Budget covers that ground.

EveryDollar's free tier and Genesis Budget both work entirely on manual entry. Genesis Budget never asks for banking credentials at all, on any plan, because there is no sync to enable.

EveryDollar has a permanent free tier that covers zero-based budgeting with unlimited categories. YNAB has no free tier, only a 34-day trial. Genesis Budget has a 30-day trial with no credit card required.

Genesis Budget supports both snowball and avalanche and shows the interest saved by each. EveryDollar follows the Ramsey method, which is snowball only. YNAB has a loan planner but no named strategy, so avalanche has to be managed manually.

Genesis Budget tracks investment portfolios with holdings and live prices, plus net worth and credit utilization. YNAB reports net worth and holds account balances but does not analyse holdings. EveryDollar does not track either.

EveryDollar and YNAB pricing and features reflect each company's published plans as of August 2026 and are subject to change — check their sites for current terms.
